3 Stars for Rebekah L. Purdy’s The Winter People

Rebekah L. Purdy’s The Winter People has a very unique fairytale-esque/fantasy/paranormal theme, which I definitely enjoyed. So many elements reminded me of some of my most beloved TV shows and books. The winter people themselves reminded me of Game of Thrones in a way with their white walkers, the whole fairytale aspect reminded me of Once Upon a Time and the ‘bonding’ took me back to my Vampire Academy spirit bound days – this book was quite a journey 🙂 It follows Salome Montgomery, a 17 year old girl who lives with her loving mother alone most of the time because her dad is constantly travelling for his job. She always finds herself spending time with her grandparents, who live just down the street. When they ask her to take care of their house for the winter months while they go on vacation, Salome is scared because of a traumatic experience she had as a child which has left her with a horrible fear of snow and really, winter in general. In The Winter People, readers go on Salome’s personal journey of fear, discovery, loss, love and bravery.

5 HUGE STARS FOR UNDERTOW

Okay so, I went into this book as I do with most books I don’t know much about: with an open mind and expecting a decent read. Boy, oh boy, was I taken aback (in a good way…a really good way) I’ll start you guys off with the Goodreads summary:

Seventeen-year-old Eila Walker’s new home has defied the brutal Atlantic for over 160 years. Abandoned since her 4th great grandmother Elizabeth vanished, the town legend declares that she drowned . . . or was struck by lightning.

Unbeknownst to the town and Eila, however, is that someone does know what really happened to Elizabeth, and he has returned, determined to protect the last surviving Walker from a history of violence.

But what starts out as a quest for redemption, evolves into something more and soon young guardian, Raef, is forced to reveal the truth to Eila. As hidden secrets about their warring
families come to light, Eila begins to realize that she may be their best shot at survival, even if it means following in her grandmother’s fearless footsteps to save her killer bodyguard.

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets – and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn’t over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there’s still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smouldering fourth instalment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe

Review: Tortured Souls by Keigh Leigh Wheaton

Title: Tortured Souls

Author: Keigh Leigh Wheaton

Series: The Orion Circle #1

Publisher: Sea Dragon Press

Date of Publication: July 29, 2014

Source: Netgalley

Rating: ★★★

Before reading Tortured SoulsI hadn’t read many paranormal books, though I’d like to say that one of my debuts into the genre was a pleasant surprise! To start, I have a short summary:

This book follows a 15 year old girl named Kassandra (although she goes by Kacie and CiCi) who leads a relatively normal life, living with her father, Adam, her brother, Gavin and her super-loving dog, Kodiak. Oh, fairly normal except for the fact that she is clairvoyant meaning she can see and communicate with spirits, both good and, unfortunately, very very evil. Since early childhood, she has recognized her “gift” (as not so much a gift, but a curse really) and shared this information with her parents. That very day, her mother fled the house and never returned – something Adam, her father, will always blame her for. When she starts going on early-morning runs with her longtime crush, the very dreamy and brave Logan, she is introduced into a whole new paranormal world which she had no idea she was living in – The Orion Circle only accepts select and elite individuals. Soon Kacie is thrown headfirst into this world, not really knowing what she’s doing….

5 HUGE Stars For Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park

Title: Eleanor & Park

Author: Rainbow Rowell

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

Date of Publication: February 26, 2013

Source: My Bookshelf

Rating: ★★★

 Two misfits.

One extraordinary love.

Eleanor… Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough…Eleanor.

Park… He knows she’ll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There’s a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises…Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try

And Rainbow gets yet another 5 stars!!

This book warmed my heart – immensely. The characters Rainbow Rowell has created through Eleanor and Park are two of the funniest, most loveable AND loving, real and relatable individuals. This book is such a great story about love, finding yourself, learning to accept who you are and accept love from others. On the other hand….

First, I’d like to thank Dundurn Press for sending me this book though Negalley in exchange for an honest review. It’s greatly appreciated! Going into reading this, I didn’t know much about it, except for the small blurb I read online. Either way, the cover caught my eye while scrolling through Netgalley and I thought I’d give it a go.

For a brief summary without too many spoilers because this is an ARC!: Edie Fraser and her mom, Sydney, have been on the run for years now, from someone they used to love and trust – her father. As a child, Edie was always careful around him because of his erratic mood swings but one day, he snapped. Ever since then, Sydney has gone to all lengths to provide a safe, abuse-free, environment for her daughter but unfortunately, this means moving. A lot. Edie stays in a town or city long enough to make some new friends and get comfortable where she is but, sooner or later her mom tells them they have to leave again. This time, to a whole new country – England.
