I just finished reading Unearthly by Cynthia Hand (as you probably noticed from the title) and loved it. Okay, to say that the whole angel idea is different would be lying considering there are tons of YA novels about angels, although not any quite like this one that Iv’e read before. I thought it was clever, instantly captivating, romantic, highly descriptive and just downright addictive. I could not put it down from the second I started reading it. (I even brought the book to the nail salon because I couldn’t stop reading) This is a basic summary (stolen from goodreads):
Now, there are certain aspects of the book that I personally admired:

The Overall Storyline
I honestly thought this plot-line was spectacular. It was so different and enjoyable to read. Clara, since she is part angel, was put on this Earth with a purpose, something she must do. Her visions lead her to a new town with new people and the boy of her dreams
literally the guy in her visions. He seems like the perfect guy for her, charming, sweet, incredibly good-looking though, there’s another guy. Tucker Avery: the complete opposite to Christian in the sense that he is popular, not because he is a ‘God’ in his school, but because his personality just attracts other people. Of course, on her journey, she encounters dangers, obstacles and learns new information that will explain a lot.
I liked how it was set in the present-day as opposed to a dystopian land because it put it into perspective. One thing I admired was the plot-twist at the very end of the novel. Now, I’m not going to spoil the ending for you, but if you’ve read it you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. And I was happy to know that Clara had two friends, Wendy and Angela, who she could count on. I especially like Wendy because she gave that little push for Tucker and Clara with that unique birthday present. I loved it!!
Clara’s Relationship With Her Mother
If you’ve read this book, you might be saying to yourself right about now, “what is this girl talking about?!” Okay, so they don’t have the most stable relationship seeing as her mother kept one of the biggest secrets ever from her (about being an angel-blood) until she was 12. However, when you really look at the big picture, her mother truly loves her and supports Clara in what is important in her life. (aka her purpose) One of the best scenes in the novel, I thought, was when Clara and her mother were being attacked by Sam, a Black Wing (a full-blooded fallen angel) they came together and persevered. Also, I like the fact that tehy can fool around with each other and understand one another’s humor. Clara’s mom just seems like a pretty cool mom. On the other hand, one thing I didn’t like was the fact that she disapproved of Tucker.
Clara’s Relationship With Tucker
So, I don’t know about all of you, but I was all about Tucker. Sorry, who is Christian again? At the beginning of the novel I completely thought to myself, “I just know I’m going to love Christian.” He just fits that ideal boyfriend character, but as soon as Tucker came into the picture, I knew he was the one. All his outings with Clara to the river, fishing, hiking, to the sunset! It was just so adorable. I really think he changed her, for the better, and made her into a more open-minded person who looks at the world differently.
Anyway, overall, I rate this book 4 stars and definitely recommend it to any of you who like fantasy, action-packed novels. Happy Reading everyone.
